The Respite Program
Overview
The respite program at Edgewood Children’s Center serves children with developmental disabilities and children who struggle with emotional, behavioral and communication disorders. Children are between the ages of 5 and 17. Service is provided until there is an improvement in the child’s behavior, stability in the home has been attained and goals have been met. The goals of this program are to reduce the risk of out-of-home placement, nurture children and families, and provide one-on-one service to the child in our in-home program while providing a time of rest for parents, families or foster parents. Families may also use in-facility respite support services which allow a full 48 hours of care during one or two weekends each month.
Services
In-Facility Respite
Edgewood’s in-facility residential respite program not only gives families time to take care of themselves, but also gives children a safe alternative for care while developing their independent living skills. Edgewood provides trained staff, a structured routine, social skills, needs-based programming and a safe environment to help the child move toward self-sufficiency. As the children learn life skills, they also participate in activities that help foster these skills in real life situations.
In-Home Respite
Edgewood’s in-home respite program provides the necessary support to enable children to remain in a stable home setting. They are often at risk of losing family and community connections due to developmental or behavioral disabilities that are challenging for families to deal with on a daily basis. Respite support takes place in child’s natural setting, and staff are trained to help children acquire appropriate behaviors in the home and community setting. With an increase in independent living and social interaction skills, the child is able to remain in his or her home and community.
Respite care services for families of children with autism

Our on-campus residential respite program gives children with autism a

living skills and provides families with time to take care of
themselves. Edgewood’s trained staff coordinates a structured routine,
social skills instruction, and needs-based programming to help the child
move toward self-sufficiency. As children learn life skills, they also
participate in activities that help foster these skills in real life
situations.
