ECC Volunteer Newsletter - Autumn 2006
"We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give."Winston Churchhill
Hello Volunteers! It’s taken me awhile to finally get something to you, and I hope to make this more of a regular feature. Because I know you want to keep abreast of everything going on at Edgewood!! SUMMER HAS FLOWN BY!!! School began on Monday, August 28th. It usually takes kids a little time to adjust to going back to school, doing the usual school stuff like following a schedule, paying attention in class and cracking the books. Edgewood kids are no different. But we are back in the groove again!
A BIG thanks to all the volunteers who helped out with the kids for the Summer Camps, as well as just being around when there was nothing scheduled! They appreciate you being there more than you can imagine!
Creative Arts Festival - July 27th The 10th Annual Creative Arts Festival was held on July 27th and was a big hit with the kids.
Titled, “Continental Creativity Craze” this year’s event included various performances in the Jones Building in the morning, fun activities happening out on the blacktop in the afternoon and foods from around the world both in the cafeteria and out!
The African & South African snakes and reptiles were a huge hit, I heard, but I wouldn’t know because I never went near them!
Big kudos go to Christy Hey and P.J. Stack for coordinating a very large event! It was a lot of work, but a major success!
Equal thanks go to our own Sue Cram and Sally Gwin for pitching in to help out.
Volunteer Appreciation Brunch On a sunny and bright Saturday morning in May, Edgewood recognized six of the Volunteers for their participation in the past year with the children.
Each year, several volunteers are selected to receive the Children of Caring Award. This award is given to a person or organization that has continually given time and effort to make the lives of the children of Edgewood better. The staff and personnel at Edgewood, as well as other volunteers, select the recipients.
After enjoying a delightful brunch in the Jones Training Center, family and guests listened as each winner was honored for their many contributions and then presented the Award.
The volunteers chosen for the Children of Caring Award for 2006 were:
· Meo Thomlinson · Julie Holley · Kati Zickler · Karen Bales · MasterCard · Club Manager’s Association of St. Louis Many thanks to all of our volunteers and congratulations to the Award recipients!
*WELCOME TO OUR NEW VOLUNTEERS!* Linda Boyer, Sally Gwin, Eileen Sazama, Donna Sargent, and Angela Wooldrige.
The GREAT St. Louis Polo Match – June 24th, In late June, one never knows what kind of weather to expect. It could be 100 degrees in the shade or a downpour of rain, (while it is still sweltering hot).
Luckily this year, we had the good fortune to have GREAT weather for Polo! No rain, no 100-degree weather, hardly a cloud in the sky. The Huntleigh/McGehee Field out in Chesterfield was the host once again for the St. Louis Polo Club annual match.
Lots of great food awaited everyone under the tents as they watched the polo match. The kids were enthralled with the face painting, pony rides and the inflatable bouncy room!
Our wonderful volunteers made the day unbelievable and critical dollars were raised to help our much needed programs. Thank you SO much!
The BIG Event!! – In the Vineyard – Nov. 11th This event is our biggest fund-raiser of the year, with lots of fun, glamour, and festivity. This year, the event will again be held at Plaza Frontenac,on November 11th. Please consider purchasing tickets, and/or Volunteering for In the Vineyard.
The following Volunteer positions are available for the November 11th event: Set-Up, Auction Monitoring, Wine Pouring, and Registration. Volunteers will assist for four (4) hours, with breaks to sample the foods provided, and to observe the festivities. In addition, Volunteers are needed during the week before the event (November 6-10) for assistance with the “last minute touches”, which may include picking up auction items, making phone calls, and other fine-tuning duties.
Training for Volunteer positions will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 9:30-10:30am and/or Wednesday, November 8th from 6:00-7:00pm. ALL Volunteers must attend one of the training sessions. Please consider participating in the event. You will be helping the children in a dynamic way. Call or e-mail if you can help – and thanks!
Christmas 2006 – For The Kids It’s Almost Here! Yikes!!! Can you believe the holidays are only a few months away? I will be collecting the Christmas Wish Lists from the kids in the cottages by the end of this month. I’ll distribute those lists in the next newsletter. Any and all help you can offer will assure a special holiday for all the children. Ho Ho Ho!
Autumn Volunteer Forum I’m looking at Thursday, October 5th for a Volunteer Forum at 5:30 p.m. Would that day and time work for you? I hope to have many of you show up (I’ll get food!)and talk with me about how things are going as a volunteer here at Edgewood. I have been with the Center for 9 months now, and I regret that I do not know as many of you as I should. I hope to change that very soon!
