Volunteer Needs

We believe:

  • Volunteers understand that "Life is an opportunity to contribute love in your own way".
  • Volunteers possess unique talents, skills, interests and experiences that can be employed to enhance the lives of the children we serve at Edgewood Children's Center.
  • Volunteers are a vital component of the care we afford our children, and Volunteers have a role in our organization that no other group can fulfill.
Requirements for Volunteers with Direct Contact Positions (Work with children)
  • Minimum age: 20 years old
  • Background checks must be completed annually
  • TB screening annually
  • Three personal references submitted
  • ECC dress code must be followed
  • Training/orientation must be completed prior to assignment (varies per assignment)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Classroom Aide (Direct contact with children)
Description:
Assist Staff Teachers and Staff Teachers Assistants in teaching and tutoring children in the classroom. Volunteers may work one-on-one with a child who needs individualized help or attention; Volunteers may be encouraged to share personal life skills, travel experiences and/or skills particular to Volunteer's expertise.
Location:
Edgewood Main Campus School or South Campus at 4974 Heege Road.
Commitment:
Minimum 1 year, one visit per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am -12 noon or 12 noon to 3 pm when school is in session.
Age:
Volunteers must be 20 years of age or older.

Cottage Activity Volunteer (Direct contact with children)
Description:
Volunteers work with the children in the residential units during evenings or weekends when the children have free time. (Normally 5:45 pm -7:00 pm Monday through Thursday; 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.) Volunteers may bring a craft, game, story books, food to prepare or spend time sitting with the children and being available to listen to the children, share their interests, build relationships.
Location:
Residential Cottages, ECC Main Campus.
Commitment:
Minimum one year, once per week, bi-weekly or once per month, during times when activities are not scheduled (to be determined by Residential Staff).
Age:
Volunteers must be 20 years of age or older.

Nurse's Aide (Direct contact with children)
Description:
Assist Staff Nurse with routine paper work, hearing tests for children, other medical office duties. Nursing experience helpful and required to administer hearing tests.
Location:
Main Campus School.
Commitment:
Minimum one year, once per week during school hours, 9 am - 12 pm or 12 pm - 3 pm.
Age:
Volunteers must be 20 years of age or older.

Phone Center Support (Indirect contact with children)
Description:
Direct incoming phone calls in high volume Reception area. Meet and greet visitors and direct visitors to pertinent location.
Location:
Main Campus Rock House Administration Building.
Commitment:
One day per week (Monday-Friday), 10 am - 2 pm.
Age:
Volunteers must be 20 years of age or older.

Clerical Assistance (Indirect contact with children)
Description:
Assist with occasional need for mailings, fund raising event support, special holiday needs, etc.
Location:
Main Campus, Administrative Building or School Building.
Commitment:
Reasonably available for advance notice requests for assistance.
Age:
Volunteers must be 20 years of age or older.

Special Projects (Indirect contact with children)
Description:
Possible long-term projects that require interest and reasonable availability to begin and finish task.
Example:
Archiving files and records, possible copying and scanning records for computer storage. Possible need for background checks/verification of confidentiality to protect privacy of clients' information.
Location:
Edgewood's Main Campus.
Commitment:
Time, interest, experience or skill to complete the task. May require working alone.
Age:
Volunteers must be 20 years of age or older.

Episodic Volunteer Opportunities

Groups of one-time-event Volunteers assist with landscaping, campus improvement projects, special parties for the children, Christmas and holiday events which include donations of gifts for individual children and fund raising events.

Volunteers from the business community have been very supportive of ECC needs in the areas of campus improvement, clean up and maintenance, and related needs. Businesses are encouraged to foster employee participation in on-campus projects which ultimately improve the lives of our children.

Student Assignments

Undergraduate and graduate level practicum opportunities are available for Foundation and Concentration practicums in Social Work, Counseling and related programs. All applicants must be 20 years old and must send a letter of request which states: hours required, dates of availability and include resume. All students must agree to background checks and TB test.

High School Student Service Programs may be accommodated ONLY through the schools which have an agreement with ECC.

ECC is not able to accommodate students for Classroom Observation.
