Volunteer

In today’s overscheduled world, time is a special gift. The goal of the Volunteer Program at Edgewood Children's Center is to provide a variety of ways for volunteers to help Edgewood. From tutoring children in the school to the work groups who energetically take on campus landscaping projects, Edgewood’s countless volunteers help us stretch our time and agency resources by donating so much of themselves.

The investment of your time has some pretty amazing benefits—knowing you’re made a difference in the life of a child. And Edgewood volunteers often say the kids give them more than they give the kids.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many opportunities to work directly with the children in our School or Residential Treatment Programs on a regular basis, and training is provided. Volunteers who work directly in the programs provide opportunities for the children to experience interaction with adults who can give them a natural response, consistency, companionship and friendship which is motivated from a caring position. These special volunteers fill a very important role-model function to children who may never have had a positive relationship with an adult. They provide an important alternative to the child’s experience, which in many cases has not included adults who are nurturing, reliable and trustworthy.

Other periodic or one-time volunteer opportunities include:

  • Volunteer at special events
  • Read to a classroom on National Young Reader’s Day in November each year
  • Assist with mailings
  • Help work groups with landscaping, painting, light maintenance, or other campus improvement projects
  • Host honor roll students at a restaurant
  • Host special holiday parties for the children
  • Donate toys or gifts for birthdays and holidays
  • Wrap presents or work in the Christmas Store

Circle of Caring Volunteer Awards

Each year we recognize a few outstanding volunteers that commit their time and resources to Edgewood. Recipients include community volunteers, foster parents, mentors, business groups, and members of the Development Board or the Friends of Edgewood. These volunteers contribute innovative ideas and generously share their interests, skills and talents with the children. They display exemplary cooperation and teamwork, and demonstrate leadership, creativity and hard work in their service to Edgewood. These outstanding volunteers are recognized each year at Edgewood's annual Volunteer Breakfast. Click here to see a list of past volunteer award recipients. Thank you for your continued service to Edgewood!
